Stripe is an excellent – and easy to use – payment gateway. Once we roll out the integration, you will be able to download your Stripe data in Putler, search on them, process refunds and more!

Overall Strategy Shift – Batch Imports – Improved Response Time and Fault Tolerance

Over the last couple of months a number of customers reported transactions missing from Putler. This happened when they had a large number of transactions. We tracked down the problem to PayPal API itself and reported the issue to PayPal. PayPal team confirmed the issue and began to add a fix.

But we started working on an alternate strategy. Instead of requesting PayPal for the entire date range, Putler now pulls data in batches. If any batch is greater than 100 transactions, Putler narrows down the time range to get fewer transactions. As soon as the most recent transactions are available, Putler updates its statistics and continues importing remaining transactions in background. Putler can now also handle getting fresh data while old batches are processed. This means you no longer need to wait for old data import to complete to get latest sales data.

Now if all this sounds too technical, only remember that these changes will make Putler more responsive and fault tolerant.

Automatic Data Refresh Enhancements

Another feedback we had from customers was that the refresh arrows keep spinning. The refresh arrows would keep spinning while Putler is bringing in transactions. The real problem was that there was no information about what Putler was doing while those arrows kept spinning. So we’ve added a beautiful progress indicator tool tip!!

Quicker, Easier Initial Account Setup

When you add a new account – PayPal, 2Checkout, Shopify or any other – Putler will quickly pull in the most recent transactions (last two days), and bring in remaining transactions in background. This cuts down the “onboarding” time significantly and lets you use Putler much faster. The refresh icon will change to indicate when an old batch is being imported so you know what Putler is doing.

New, “Plain Grey” Theme

While most people love Putler’s colorful and vibrant themes, a design guru suggested we add a simpler, plainer, whiter theme! We trust his judgement and have added a plain grey theme to Putler. You can try it out from the theme selector in top right corner of Putler. Let us know how you like it!

Refund Calculation Improvements

This release also contains a number of small fixes around refunds – partial refunds, refunds on variations, refunds for customers with no email address (e.g. transactions from virtual terminal) etc.

We introduced “No-API-Needed-Allow-Putler-To-Pull-Your-PayPal-Data” support in August 2012. Instead of Putler making direct requests to PayPal servers (which requires your PayPal API information), the new method routes requests via our server. We use our API credentials to get transactions from PayPal and pass them back to Putler. This makes things a lot simpler for you! A user experience goal achieved!

A technical goal of any such “on-behalf-of” / “proxy” arrangement is to make the process secure and fast. A big reason why Putler gets so much love from customers is its speed. Putler is hands down the fastest way to analyze, locate and process transactions.

And we’ve gone a notch higher.

Till yesterday, Putler could process 3 requests per second per client. From now on, it can do 6 without even blinking! We have effectively doubled the speed of “data import” and “refresh”. So both setting up a new account, and getting data every 5 minutes would finish a lot quicker now.

How did we do it?

We let go of the database! We used to store authorization information (whether the user has granted permissions to bring in data on their behalf from Putler) in a MySQL table. Every time Putler requested new transactions, the system would need to check the database and process the request only if rules are met. This is nothing new by the way, most applications would be implemented this way. But we wanted to eliminate this “overhead” too (we’d already done away with some other optimisations last week), so rewrote our APIs to store data in a secure filesystem, instead of the database. This also eliminates the need for a database and database availability affecting response times.

Turns out that was a heck of a trick and our logs show 6 requests per client per second now.

We process 100,000 requests per day on average these days for PayPal. And the trend is going upward.

This performance boost will certainly make everyone happier!

A wonderful tool for reviewing and managing PayPal information 

I use PayPal for donations for my philosophy show Freedomain Radio, and since aggregating PayPal data  is a very time-consuming process, I generally only find out at the end of the month how I’ve been doing. A friend of mine suggested that I check out this program Putler, which provides real-time graphical interactions with your PayPal account, and I have found it to be simply indispensable. View Charts / Stats by Days / Weeks / Months or Years

Putler decides the granularity of charts automatically. If you are seeing sales data for a month, it will automatically draw the chart with daily stats. When the time range goes higher, it automatically switches to monthly and yearly stats. This is very useful, but users have been asking for “zooming in” on these charts. They wanted to see daily stats even if the date range spanned across three months.

Instead of complicating things with a zoom in / zoom out provision, Putler 2.5 lets you pick up grouping granularity that you desire…

Analyze Your Shopify Sales with Putler

Shopify is one of the most loved hosted e-commerce platform. And Putler can now import your Shopify transactions too (along with PayPal and 2Checkout).

You can see your Shopify orders, all statistics, and can even refund/cancel the orders.

Please note that Shopify support works well, but will need to go through revisions. Shopify will be switching to v2 of their APIs in future and Putler will move to the new APIs too. Also, Putler currently uses your own API information to connect to Shopify. In future, we will add OAuth2 support, such that you can authorize Putler to bring in your Shopify data on your behalf.

To add your Shopify account to Putler, go to Settings – Account. Click on the green plus icon and fill in your Shopify API details.

Click Continue, then Save. Putler will automatically import your data and keep doing that now on.

Simply add a new account, select 2Checkout as the type and add your 2Checkout API username and password. If you don’t have an API username, here’s how you can create one.

2Checkout sales will start showing up in Putler. You can see reports, transaction details and even issue refunds!

Ever wanted to authorize and charge credit cards from your computer? If you have PayPal Pro, you can now use Virtual Terminal for Putler to authorize, charge, capture and void cards right from your desktop. No need to login to PayPal website!!

Note: Virtual Terminal for Putler is currently available only to existing Putler users – Plus, Premium and Max.

Note 2: It also requires PayPal Pro / Payflow and an account setup with your own PayPal API credentials (does not work where you’ve setup the account allowing Putler to access your data)
